It’s the sound of unthawing. Canopies And Drapes…not heard from in a while, yet thankfully back…has excelled as an artist practically writing short stories into her songs, packed with details and emotions. With “Sylvia,” though, what she’s saying seems less important than how it comes out. Set over glacial synths and a relaxed beat, her words glide along with the sounds, shifting themselves into new shapes to keep the song interesting. It also builds up to a great finale – after three minutes of iciness and skittery beats, a fluttery sound emerges in the back, a beam of sunlight hitting the surface. It isn’t clear if that’s a happy ending or just a momentary escape, but it is a wonderful flourish to close it out. Listen below.
