New Yunomi: “Mentai Cosmic”

Sound project Yunomi seems like a constant presence on SoundCloud, mainly because every day it seems like someone went and remixed one of their earlier songs. So what a delight that a new number, “Mentai Cosmic,” appeared online instead of the 18th pitch-shifted take on a song released in the spring. Yunomi — which relies on one-half of the (pretty good) idol unit BPM15Q for vocals — has been a good exercise in manic interpretations of pop, and “Mentai Cosmic” weaves traditional Japanese instruments alongside big dumb EDM wub, but focusing all of it into a bouncy song (that is, partially, about mentaiko). It gets pretty busy, but always make sure the hook gets its proper due. Listen above.

Pretty easily classified as indie-pop, right? Exhibit A being, uh, that twee-tastic name. Or maybe how the group identifies as “indie/pop.” The majority of Monochrome Chocolate’s bite-sized samples also backup this theory, tracks like “Vineyard” and “Beyonce” balancing sweet ennui with galloping vocal delivery. So yeah – indie pop. Yet this four-piece works in some…

  • Japanese Christmas Round-Up 2012: Miila, Her Ghost Friend,

  • New Yunomi Featuring Toriena: “Oedo Controller”

Calling it a “trend” might be a stretch, but something that has definitely appeared more in Japanese electronic music over the past year is an embrace of traditional sounds. This probably goes in cycles — it wasn’t long ago Omodaka was doing this merger incredibly well, and it has popped up at times since (Seiho,…

I can earnestly say that, without the internet as it existed in the early 2010s, my life would be completely different. Living in rural Japan, there was a strong but small local community I could rely on, and I’m forever thankful for that, but you also miss out on so much more. Yet back then,…
