Between the woozy pop of Fancy Books and the dusk-shrouded rock of The Paellas, Tokyo’s Dead Funny Records had a pretty strong 2012. Add Jappers to that diverse-sounding list – this outfit’s Lately EP plays around with a more classic rock/pop sound, the tracks within sounding more clear than either the seasick Fancy Books or the fuzz-touched Paellas. “Settle Down” is a laid-back number that doesn’t waste time – it shambles in, delivers its main point (“you just need to settle down”) and gets out shortly after. It’s simple and effective stuff. The title track, meanwhile, borrows moves from “You Can’t Hurry Love” but goes in a rougher direction, Jappers’ vocals adding a gruff touch to the otherwise limber song, as if it got a little whiskey in its system beforehand.
