JAM The MOD: “Since Tomorrow”

Indie-pop label Ano(t)raks plans on releasing a new compilation album in February, and have already revealed a list of artists who will be contributing to the sequel to the excellent Soon comp. The forthcoming release features a lot of familiar names – Post Modern Team, Boyish, The Paellas and many more…but also features a few names, like Fukuoka’s JAM The MOD. If you simply assumed they sounded like a typical Japanese indie-pop band – bouncy guitars, sigh-worthy lyrics, a dreamy quality to their sound – I wouldn’t blame you, because I did the exact same thing. Then I clicked “play.”

The group’s current – and only available – jam “Since Tomorrow” merges folksy indie-pop with the stuttering beats of dubstep circa 2007. It’s a combination that instantly makes JAM The MOD standout from the nation’s twee-ish scene, the beats adding a touch of mischief to what is otherwise a very pretty, easy-breezy strumalong. It’s a track worthy of attention just for the peculiar sonic combo, but proves to be worth your time because of how good JAM The MOD make it sound. What’s even more exciting is that it hints at new possibilities in Japan’s indie-pop scene. It will be interesting to see what directions JAM The MOD go in next…like on that compilation…but hopefully they continue to challenge themselves. Listen below.

    このEPは日本インディー・ポップ界のとても強力なタッグから生まれています。”Heartbreak”や”Never Let You Down”等、2012年度最高峰ともいえる曲をリリースした大阪のPost Modern Teamと、元Candy EyesのDai OgasawaraによるTwangy Twangyが、Canata Records(BOYISH, Elfs In Bloom)からスプリット・EPをリリースしました。 Post Modern Teamの”She Does Something To Me”では、彼らの普段のスタイルから離れ、新しい手法を模索しているようです。Sloppy Joeに近いテイストを感じます。ザ・スミスやザ・キュアー等のインディー・ポップとも比較されそうですが、曲を通して細かいディテールが詰め込まれていますし、コーラスも決してアンセムのような物ではありません。 Twangy Twangyの曲は電子楽器とアコースティック・ギターで構築されています。つぶやくようなボーカルにもう少しヴォリュームが必要かな、とは感じますが、とても美しい曲で、暑い八月中旬にはもってこいでしょう。ダウンロードはこちらから。また、視聴は以下から。 Where The Action Is EP by Canata Records

    ブロステップ、そしてもっと広い定義で言うとダブステップは、アメリカを含む多くの国でメインストリームになってきています。SPINやRolling Stoneといった雑誌では、このダンスミュージックにおける新たな流れについて多く取り上げています。また、The Electric Daisy Carnival のようなフェスも、膨大な動員数を誇っています。デッドマウスやスクリレックス、そしてベースネクター等、多くのダブステップアーティストがトップクラスのアクトになってきていて、好きでも嫌いでも、今最も注目すべきムーブメントだというのは認めざるを得ないでしょう。 日本でも最近になってシーンが出来てきたみたいです。Inorgの”Sleep”なんかがスクリレックスのようなブロステップの日本人的解釈と言えるのではないでしょうか。曲はロックファンならおなじみの、レディオヘッドの”Fitter Happier”からのサンプルで始まります。明確な芯がありつつも、いわゆる”ダブステップ”とは違い、ソフトな空気感を持っていて、ドロップが来ても柔らかいので、ジャンルの持つ偏見みたいな物を取っ払うような斬新サウンドになっています。 色々なエレクトロ・ジャンルで実験をする東京のMiiiは、最近のリリース、”Tokyo War Trap”で、ブロステップに挑戦しています。でも面白いひねりが加えられていて、例えばタイトル・トラックでは、ブロステップと同じくらいレゲエからの影響が感じられます。”Heat Off The Floor”は、Zombyとかがやりそうな、ダブステップ愛を避けるようなトラック。でも”Anti Virus Anti”なんかが特にそうなのですが、低音重視の流れを意識しているのは明確です。ダウンロードはこちらから、視聴は以下から。 Tokyo War Trap EP by Miii もし強烈なのが聴きたいのであれば、Fazerockの”Attempted Suicide”というEPを紹介します。顔面をぶん殴るような力強いドロップと、面と向かって怒鳴ってくるようなラップがフィーチャーされています。気になる方は是非お聴きあれ。 ATTEMPTED SUICIDE by fazerock

インディ・ポップ・レーベルAno(t)raksが２月に新しいコンピレーション・アルバムをリリースします。既にいくつかの参加アーティストが発表されていて、このコンピが本当に素晴らしい物になると期待させてくれます。Post Modern Team、BoyishやThe Paellas等、お馴染みのアーティスト達に加え、JAM The MODという福岡のバンド等、新しい名前もいくつか。跳ねるギターやため息をつきたくなる歌詞からなる典型的な日本のインディ・ポップを想像していませんか？…とは言うものの、恥ずかしながら私も同じでした。そんな雰囲気を仮定しながら再生ボタンをクリックしたのはここだけの話。

今の所このグループはSoundCloudで”Since Tomorrow”だけしかリリースしていないのですが、これが凄く個性的。フォーキーなインディ・ポップが2007年あたりのダブステップ・リズムに乗っかってる独特なスタイルなんです。なんと言ってもこのビート感が他のTweeなアーティスト達との違いで、暖かく優しいメロディーが特徴的な曲に冷たい緊迫感を与えています。ただ単にジャンルをくっ付けるのは誰にだってできる事。でもJAM The MODは上手く異なる要素を組み合わせる事に成功していて、だからこそ注目すべきなのです。日本のインディ・ポップ・アーティスト達にとっても良いヒントになるのでは？JAM The MODのこれからが気になります…はたしてコンピにはどんな曲を提供するのか…いずれにせよ、これからもどんどん新しい事にチャレンジして欲しいです。試聴は以下から。
