It’s debateable whether Seapunk was ever an honest-to-goodness scene or just a close-knit community of artists with a silly-sounding name that lots of publications made fun. Regardless of whether Seapunk made a splash (ugh) larger than a few Twitter hashtags isn’t clear, but there does remain a devoted set of people in love with the idea, and some of them reside here in Japan. One such musician is Umio, who puts the dolphin-friendly genre’s name right in the title of new song “Yunoochi To Seapunk.” Save for a few water sounds, I’m not even sure if this is Seapunk, but it is certainly a hectic and interesting tune. The song starts with a sample from presumably an anime, before Umio ushers out a simple beat and some woozy synths. From their “Yunoochi” goes all over the place – drum ‘n’ bass percussion, new-age segues, what sounds like a squeaky toy being suffocated. Whatever you want to call it, it’s madcap and engrossing, and at five minutes pretty ambitious. Listen below.
